A NOTE FROM DOUG:
The importance of community has always been a guiding principle for us as a dance company. Whether in the studio, on stage or teaching, we’ve always believed in the importance and power of connection. As we move online, we want to retain that sense with all of our students: we may be alone in our own worlds at this point in time, but the discovery of connection is still as strong as ever. DOVA’s Company and musicians are exploring new ways to reach out past the screen in front of you to give you the same in-depth experience you’ve always valued. Some new rules for sure that call for reinvention from all of us.
Modern Technique with Current Company Members
This highly technical, movement-based class investigates the line of human movement and how it can affect the broader strokes of our dancing. Through the expansive use of the back and limbs, Varone’s style will be explored through an emphasis on breath, strength, dynamic lyricism and musicality.
Somatics with Erin Owen
Deep Roots/wild resilience. Our daily warm-up. This holistic approach to Pilates will also includes principles from yoga, dance, Feldenkrais, physical therapy, breathwork, and GYROTONIC®. We'll go from micro to macro, inside to outside, local to global.
Rotating Creative Classes (afternoon classes will rotate daily so that you take each class below):
Devices with Doug Varone and Company Members
Varone will emphasize compositional structure and explore new devices for expanding and inventing material. A body of material will be created, varied and manipulated both, pushing towards new discoveries. A work will be created on and with the participants, a sharing of this work will take place on the final day.
Asymmetric Possibilities with Paul Singh
This is an improvisation class that uses all parts of your dancing histories. We'll use energetic meridians, breathing rituals, distraction/disorientation, and pleasure principles as tools and guides for warming up. By the end we'll have a few methods to spark generative movement that soothe the body and feed the creative needs.
Working with Dramatic Text with Nancy Bannon
In this class we'll play with a short monologue. We'll create context through analyzing character and circumstances and build a dynamic world through imagination. We'll also spend some time writing and working physically.
